The opportunity

Our City Development Department has an exciting opportunity for an experienced planner to join our team as a Principal Urban Planner. Reporting to the Coordinator City Planning, you will contribute to the ongoing operation of a successful, high functioning planning approvals service for Council that provides customer centric outcomes, whilst mentoring high performing and enthusiastic planning professionals.

As our Principal Urban Planner, you will manage complex planning projects across the municipality, including urban renewal and brown-fill development. You will be someone who is comfortable making courageous decisions and has significant experience with VCAT. You will also have significant experience in the application of Victorian Planning Legislation, be an engaging presenter and someone with exceptional project management and communication skills who enjoys building great relationships.

Key Responsibilities

  • Make robust, high quality planning decisions by way of thorough analysis, good technical understanding of the legislative and policy framework, strategic thinking and exercising of good judgement.
  • Resolve statutory and strategic planning issues through innovation, problem solving, stakeholder management to facilitate development and seeking positive outcomes.
  • Provide a high level of customer service in a timely, prompt, accurate and courteous manner when dealing with internal and external customers whilst always seeking positive outcomes.
  • Mentor a team of planners to ensure service standards are met and workloads are monitored and managed effectively and efficiently.
  • Manage complex VCAT appeals and Advisory Committee submissions, including reviewing submissions and negotiating outcomes.
  • Encourage an environment where innovation, continuous improvement and achievement are emphasised and rewarded.

About You

To be considered for this role, you will have the following:

  • A tertiary qualification in town planning and a thorough knowledge of the Victorian planning legislation framework;
  • Demonstrated leadership experience with the ability to motivate and empower a group of professionals in the service delivery of statutory and strategic planning;
  • Demonstrable experience in a planning role within an urban environment, particularly in local government.
  • Well developed customer service ethic.
